Big Break

Michael Buble's big break came at a performance for a party for a man named Michael McSweeney, former advisor to the Canadian Prime Minister. McSweeney was so impressed with the performance that he started circulating the independent album, and it eventually got into the hands of Brian Mulroney and his wife. In 2000, they invited Buble to sing at their daughter's wedding, at which he amazed everyone with a performance of Mack the Knife by Kurt Weill. At the ceremonies, he was introduced to David Foster, a Grammy award winning producer and Warner Bros. music executive. The following year, Foster signed Buble to the 143 Records label, and the two began working on the first major album release."The last thing we wanted to do was a tribute album or a lounge act," says Bublé. "We wanted to treat this music with the love and respect it deserves, but the important thing was to capture a spirit and energy and that wasn't confined to any particular musical era."

Aspiring Singer

Because of his success with the talent contest, Delich helped Michael create his first independent CD. Meanwhile, Santanga offered free plumbing service to anyone who could provide career opportunities for his grandson, and Michael became a regular appearance at local music venues. In 1996, Michael landed a role in the Vancouver run of the musical Red Rock Diner as Elvis, where he caught the eye of a fellow dancer and singer named Debbie Tismuss. Two years later, the couple moved to Toronto to join in the production of a big band effort called Forever Swing (1998).

Early Life

Michael Steven Buble was born September 9, 1975 in Burnaby, British Columbia. His father, Lewis, was often out at sea, and thus his mother Amber and grandfather Demetrio Santanga were his, and his sisters' (Crystal and Brandee) primary caregivers. Santanga had a huge collection of old records of big band favorites such as Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and Tony Bennett, which he and Michael would listen to together frequently. It was because of these that Michael decided he wanted to become a singer, to follow in the footsteps of the greats.

With encouragement from his grandfather, he entered and won a local talent contest. The organizer, Beverly Delich, however, discovered that he was only 17, one year younger than the requirement, and disqualified him. However, she directed him toward the British Columbia Youth Talent Search, and using his grandfather's favorite tunes, he won. This was the start of a great career for Michael Buble.
